Wednesday morning when I visited ‘Good Morning America’ I got a nice surprise in the form of the “Fab Five” – otherwise known as the USA Women’s Gymnastics team! As someone who watched them win gold and openly weeped while doing so, I was pretty excited to see them in person complete with their medals around their necks.
What I wasn’t prepared for however was how unfriendly McKayla Maroney, Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, and Kyla Ross would be. I mean, we’ve all seen the ‘Mean Girls’ meme’s running around the internet but… those aren’t supposed to be taken literally, right? Err… maybe someone should tell THEM that.
As the girls left ‘Good Morning America’ to a very small crowd of mostly tween girls hoping to see their new athletic idols, they couldn’t even crack a smile. There was no eye contact, no waving, no smiling, no nothing… even as their fans called their names, waved, and asked for autographs.
Now, here’s where I have to play fair: Before the girls themselves left their moms left, and when the girl next to me asked Erin Maroney, McKayla’s mom, if her daughter would sign autographs, she told us that they were not allowed to. When asked why she said, “I don’t know, they won’t let them.” I have to assume that ‘they’ is the Powers That Be who take over athletes lives following the Olympics. So, okay, they aren’t allowed to sign autographs… but you think they would at least wave, smile, say hi as they walk by…?
I guess fans will have to wait until the 14th minute of the “Fab Five” fame in order to meet their idols. Sorry America!
